Night of the Mannequins

Sometimes you just know what you're doing is the only thing to be doing. That the world is conspiring all around you to make it happen, like, not just giving you permission, but herding you the direction you need to go, giving you secret nods and obvious hand signals, and getting everything out of the way so you have the clearest path possible.

The greatest good, all that, which is also just a way of saying the least bad,

Shanna was the first to go. And by "go" I mean die. And by "die" I mean get killed.

Maybe this is how it happens after high school, right? Or even on the ramp up to high school being over. You just drift away, and then it gets easier not to call, and then you forget the number, and then you see your old friend in line for the movie or whatever and you let your eyes keep moving, because it’s going to be awkward now.

Moms are so oblivious. It’s like they live in a bubble of wishful thinking.

SO SHANNA GOT A new job at the movie theater, we thought we’d play a fun prank on her, and now most of us are dead, and I’m really starting to feel kind of guilty about it all.

It seems so obvious when you’re the one with blood on your hands, right? Like everyone’s watching you. Like everybody’s waiting.

it was my third day of forgetting my meds, I guess I should say. They usually tamp my nerves down so people can’t see them.

The tornado the alarms had screamed about ... hadn't actually happened, but around here you never know. Better safe in the cellar than sorry halfway up the sky.
