The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing
Quotes from the Book
But of all the effects of tidying, I think the most amazing is learning to like yourself. Through the process of selecting what brings you joy and letting go of what doesn’t, you develop your capacity to choose, to make decisions, and to take action, and this in turn develops your self-confidence.
The true purpose of tidying is not to cut down on your possessions or declutter your space. The ultimate goal is to spark joy every day and lead a joyful life.
It's hard to change someone else. But we can change ourselves.
Ultimately, I think the purpose of life is to be happy and fulfilled. I don't mean this in a selfish 'me first' way. When we exude an aura of happiniess, this positive energy spreads to those around us, making the world a better place. To meet that larger goal, I think we each need to find happiness in harmony with those around us. So, what do we need in our daily lives to make this possible? I think one element is discovering our creative outlets and reveling in them.
Finding a comfortable balance between work and private life will not only differ from one person to another, but will also depend on what stage of life each person is in. What’s important is to take a good look at what kind of working style you want right now and what kind of balance between your job and private life seems right for you.
By taking time to reflect on our approach to work, we can bring our work life closer to our ideal.
Even if you’re working from home, it’s important to grace your workplace with things that spark joy, rather than making it solely utilitarian.
If you could make any dream come true, what would your ideal lifestyle be?

About the book
From the #1 bestselling sensation and Netflix star comes her inspirational visual guide to elevating the joy in every aspect of your life, with more than 100 photographs of the Marie Kondo lifestyle.
Inspired by the Japanese concept of kurashi, or “way of life,” Kurashi at Home invites you to visualize your ideal life from the moment you wake up until the end of each day. By applying the time-tested query from Marie Kondo’s The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up—“Does it spark joy?”—to your mindset and behaviors, you are invited to imagine what your life could look like free from any limitations. This vision then becomes a touchpoint that helps you make conscious, mindful choices—from how you use every corner of your living space to how you take advantage of every moment.
At its core, the KonMari philosophy focuses not on what to get rid of, but on what to keep. In this inspiration
