What are you doing? Where's Dean?" I covered my face with my hands and turned back, but I'd certainly seen all there was to see of Sam. "Woof," said Sam, from a human throat, and the truth stomped over me in combat boots. I whirled back to face him, so angry I felt like I was going to blow a gasket. About the book

"Dead Until Dark" introduces Sookie Stackhouse, a telepathic cocktail waitress in the small Louisiana town of Bon Temps, in a world where vampires have recently "come out of the coffin" and live openly among humans thanks to the invention of synthetic blood. When the vampire Bill Compton walks into the bar where Sookie works, she is drawn to him in part because she cannot hear his thoughts, giving her relief from the constant mental noise of the people around her. Their romance unfolds against a string of murders in the town, and Sookie's unusual gift pulls her into the investigation.

The novel blends supernatural romance, small-town Southern mystery, and gothic fantasy, using vampires' new legal visibility as a lens for themes of prejudice, otherness, and belonging. Sookie's telepathy, long treated by her community as a disability or curse, becomes a kind of power, while her relationship with Bill explores attraction across difference and the dangers that come with it.

The book launched the long-running Sookie Stackhouse / Southern Vampire Mysteries series and won the Anthony Award for Best Paperback Original. It later gained wide popularity as the basis for the HBO television series "True Blood," and is frequently cited as a defining entry in the early-2000s wave of paranormal romance and urban fantasy.
