I initially wanted to hire a maid in hopes that she would become my replacement—that if Andrew fell in love with another woman, he would finally let me go. But that’s not why I hired Millie. About the book

"The Housemaid" is a psychological thriller in which Millie Calloway, a young woman with a criminal past struggling to rebuild her life, takes a live-in job cleaning and caring for the home of the wealthy Winchester family on Long Island. From her cramped attic room, which she notices locks only from the outside, Millie is drawn into the tense dynamic between her glamorous but erratic employer, Nina Winchester, and Nina's charming husband, Andrew. As Millie tries to keep her own secrets hidden, she begins to suspect that nothing in the household is what it appears to be.

The novel turns on themes of domestic abuse, power, class, and survival, using its claustrophobic household setting and shifting first-person narration to keep the reader uncertain about who is the victim and who is the manipulator. McFadden builds suspense through unreliable perspectives and a mid-book reversal that recasts earlier events, a structure that became the book's signature talking point.

"The Housemaid" became a major commercial success, selling over two million copies and spending well over a hundred weeks on The New York Times trade paperback best-seller list, propelled in large part by word of mouth on BookTok and other social-media reading communities. It won the 2023 International Thriller Writers Award for Best Paperback Original and spawned a best-selling series as well as a 2025 feature film adaptation.
