The Partner

The Partner is John Grisham's eighth novel, a legal thriller centered on Patrick Lanigan, a junior partner at a Biloxi, Mississippi law firm who discovers his colleagues are conspiring to defraud the U.S. government through falsified Navy shipbuilding contracts. Cut out of the scheme, Patrick fakes his own death in a car crash, secretly siphons roughly ninety million dollars from the offshore accounts where the money is hidden, and vanishes into a new life in South America. The story opens with his capture years later and follows the tangle of investigations, lawsuits, and interrogations that unfold as everyone he wronged tries to recover the money.

Beneath its propulsive plot, the novel explores betrayal, greed, and the limits of revenge, along with the question of whether anyone can truly escape their past. Grisham complicates the usual thriller formula by making his protagonist both a criminal and, in some respects, a victim of even more corrupt men, blurring the line between justice and manipulation as Patrick stays several steps ahead of his pursuers.

Published by Doubleday in 1997, The Partner became a major bestseller, consistent with Grisham's dominance of the legal-thriller market in the 1990s. Critics noted its intricate plotting, with Kirkus Reviews calling it among his best-plotted novels, though some reviewers found its view of human nature notably cynical.
