E non si era mai lamentato di vivere nell'epoca che il caso o il destino gli avevano assegnato. Si nasce quando si nasce e si muore quando viene la nostra ora, e questi per Wallander erano i limiti dell'esistenza. Ma in quella notte passata insieme a Baiba Liepa in quella gelida chiesa fu costretto a guardare dentro se stesso come non aveva mai fatto prima. Durante quella notte interminabile si rese conto che la ricca Svezia non era il mondo e che quelle che fino ad allora aveva considerato delle difficoltà apparivano insignificanti se paragonate al terrore con cui Baiba Liepa doveva vivere giorno dopo giorno. Quella notte il ricordo del massacro di cui era stato testimone lo colpì con tutta la sua violenza. Quello a cui aveva assistito none era stato un incubo, le armi erano armi vere e le pallottole che avevano brutalmente interrotto delle vite umane erano pallottole vere. Ma non parliamo con sconosciuto a meno che non sia veramente necessario o se ne siamo costretti, perché ciò che è sconosciuto può imbarazzarci, farci male, gli sconosciuti gettano le cartacce per strada e parlano troppo. Non abbiamo mai creato un impero e quindi non siamo stati costretti a vederlo crollare. Ma ci siamo autoconvinti di aver creato il migliore paese del mondo, anche se siamo una piccola nazione. Siamo i custodi fedeli delle porte del paradiso, ma adesso che la festa è finita, ci vendichiamo con un controllo dei passaporti tra i più insopportabili al mondo
