“عندما يخرج الروائيون عن الموضوع نشعر بالملل. هذه هي شكوانا، على أي حال عندما نشعر بالملل من رواية ما، نقول عنها أنها خرجت عن الموضوع، لكن هناك الكثير من الأسباب التي تجعل رواية ما تتوقف عن إمتاعنا. الأوصاف الطويلة للطبيعة تجعل بعض القراء يتثاءبون؛ البعض يشعرون بالملل لأنه لا يوجد ما يكفي عن الجنس، وآخرون لأنه يوجد أكثر من اللازم؛ والبعض يتضايق من القدر الضئيل من الوصف، والبعض يتضايق من المؤلفين الذين يدخلون في تفاصيل أكثر من اللازم حول خلفيات عائلية مضطربة. وما يجعل رواية ما شديدة الجاذبية ليس هو حضور أو غياب الخواص المذكورة أعلاه، إنها مهارة الروائي وأسلوبه وبتعبير آخر يمكن أن تكون الرواية عن أي شيء. دعونا لا ننسى أيضا أن هذا "الأي شيء" يتبع منطقا محددا. ربما يستطيع كاتب أن يضع أي شيء وكل شيء داخل رواية، ولكن حتى بهذه الطريقة فإننا نحن القراء سرعان ما نصبح ملولين ونفقد صبرنا عندما يشرد المؤلف عن الموضوع، ويأخذ وقتا أطول من اللازم لكي يقول ما يريد أن يقوله أو يضمن تفاصيل لا حاجة إليها.”
