About Rachael Lippincott
About the book
Five Feet Apart is a young adult romance about Stella Grant and Will Newman, two teenagers with cystic fibrosis who meet while admitted to the same hospital. Because patients with CF risk dangerous cross-infection if they get too close, hospital protocol requires them to stay six feet apart at all times. As Stella, a disciplined rule-follower who manages her treatment meticulously, and Will, who is far more careless about his regimen, are drawn to each other, they decide to steal back one of those six feet, keeping themselves five feet apart as a small act of defiance.
The novel weaves together themes of love constrained by illness, mortality, control versus surrender, and the longing for physical touch and ordinary closeness. Told in alternating first-person perspectives from Stella and Will, it explores how chronic illness shapes identity and relationships, and the tension between protecting one's life and actually living it.
Released in November 2018 by Simon & Schuster, the book was developed alongside the screenplay by Mikki Daughtry and Tobias Iaconis and adapted by Rachael Lippincott. It became a commercial success, reaching bestseller status, and was published in tandem with the 2019 film of the same name, which broadened its popularity among young adult readers.
