The Wondrous Life and Loves of Nella Carter

Brionni Nwosu's debut novel is a work of historical magical realism that opens with Nella May Carter, a young woman born enslaved in eighteenth-century Georgia, catching the attention of Death itself. Disgusted by humanity and convinced the world would be better without it, Death lures Nella into a Faustian bargain: the chance at immortal life if she can prove that human beings are worth saving. To meet that challenge, Nella spends centuries moving through time and across the globe, taking on new identities and documenting the beauty, love, and connection she finds in every era and every person she meets.

The novel's central concern is whether beauty and love can survive under systemic oppression, and it answers by following one Black woman's insistence on finding goodness even in the cruelest conditions. Nella becomes a writer across her many lives, recording the world through journals, society columns, reporting, and bestselling books published under countless pen names. Themes of mortality, memory, resilience, and the worth of ordinary human kindness run throughout, anchored by Nella's evolving, often combative relationship with a disillusioned Death.

As Nwosu's first novel, the book was published by Lake Union Publishing in December 2025 and drew comparison to V.E. Schwab's The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, with reviewers noting its grounding in Black history and nonwhite cultures as a point of distinction. Critics praised its ambition and the vividness of its historical settings, particularly its New Orleans and Harlem Renaissance sections, while some found the romantic plotlines more repetitive in the later chapters.
