Quotes from the Book
It surprises me, how a small gesture can feel so very big. How sometimes you don't realize the nervousness or sadness you were holding deep inside until the touch of someone you love lets it all out of you, like your entire body is exhaling.

Pick a side, Max. I feel like I'm living through some vampire romance where you can't be near me because my blood smells delicious.

Max: Okay. One day a little boy is sitting on the floor of his living room, playing with some toy trucks. Voom!He shoots one across the carpet, but it goes too far, to the other side of the sofa. And then miraculously, it shoots right back. Surprised, the little boy peers around the sofa to find a girl around his age with a very attractive bowl cut, building a giant Lego castle. She asks him if he wants to play, before popping one of the Legos in her mouth, informing him that if he's hungry, they are made out of chocolate. And the boy had never felt happy in his whole life. They build the most incredible chocolate castle, with dragons and soldiers and moat made of milk. And then they fell asleep side by side. The boy wakes up in his living room, and even though there is no castle or no little girl, he still feels just as happy. And he knows he will see her again. Alice: Was that me? Max: That was you. The first time we met.

Max: Could you come back here, please? Lying here was much more enjoyable about thirty seconds ago.

But Max's Volvo is double-parked in front of my house when Jerry and I return, and Max is waiting on the stoop, holding four coffees. "I didn't know what kind you like. So I just got like...all of them.

Max: Alice. How about we allow the elevator to move again, before you have a breakdown? Alice: I'm sorry. Max: It's okay. Let's just press the button ... Alice: No, not about that. About what I said. About how I felt. I'm sorry that I made you feel like you weren't enough, Max, because you are. I was afraid. For my whole life, the dreams were all I had. They were the only thing that made me feel less alone. And you were part of that. And you got over it, you learned how to funtion, but I didn't. And I didn't understand that when I lost the dreams, I wouldn't lose you, too.

Max: I don't know what to do. I've been walking around campus, wracking my brain, tyring to figure out what to do. Because I want to get better, realy. I know we have to get better. I know the dreams have to stop. But I also don't want to lose you. I can't lose you, Alice. Alice: You will never lose me. I'm right here.

Max: Back to the cloud. To finish wat we starte. Alice: We don't have to go back to the cloud. Max: We don't? Alice: Nope. Max: Great. Because I've been dying to do this again all night.

I know somewhere deep within my brain that when a woman finds herself on the receiving end of a gallant kiss, she should let herself just be kissed. Isn't that how it always works in movies? But I'm unable to play the part. Nothing can stop my hands from reaching up and tangling themselves in Max's hair, my arms from pulling me to him and him to me, closer than we already were. As though I've never been kissed before. As though I'm devouring him. As though we're the last two people left on the planet and kissing is the one thing that can keep us alive.

Max: Getting in the elevator. Just to tell me how you felt. You are totally insane, Alice, and you do live in a dreamworld sometimes. You prefer things when they are stranger and prettier than everyday life. But that means you also make every moment of my life dreamier. More exciting and unexpected. When you are around, my life is always sparkly. And I don't want to change you. I don't want to run from it, either. I want to make you feel the way you make me feel. I want to make you happy.

Max: [...] I just sort of wish that last night's dream balloon never came down to earth again: Alice: Why? What happened on the balloon? Max: Oh, you don't remember? Would it help if I reminded you? Alice: It's not just helpful, it's important. Crucial to research as a matter of fa-. Alice: Sometimes when you kiss me, I become completley weightless.

..my father explained to me in a hushed tone that in times of extreme stress or trauma, humans of all ages will resort back to the fetal position, because it is an instinctual way to protect all our vital organs and because it reminds us of the safest place we all began, the womb.

In my favorite dream of you and me, all we do is drive. Just open road. Sometimes we're in the desert, other times swerving around woody mountain ledges, this feeling of total wonder and excitement coursing through me. In the dream I always know we are going somewhere great. But even if we never get there, it doesn't matter, because I'm with you.

About the book
For as long as Alice can remember, she has dreamed of Max. Together, they have travelled the world and fallen deliriously, hopelessly in love. Max is the boy of her dreams—and only her dreams. Because he doesn’t exist.
But when Alice walks into class on her first day at a new school, there he is. Real Max is nothing like Dream Max. He’s stubborn and complicated. And he has a whole life Alice isn’t a part of. Getting to know each other in reality isn’t as perfect as Alice always hoped.
Alarmingly, when their dreams start to bleed into their waking hours, the pair realize that they might have to put an end to a lifetime of dreaming about each other. But when you fall in love in your dreams, can reality ever be enough?
