Somewhere in the center of my soul, a rusty chain began to unwind. It freed itself, link by link, from where it had rested, unobserved, waiting for him. My hands, which had been balled up and pressed against his chest, unfurled with it. The chain continued to drop, to an unfathomable depth where there was nothing but darkness and Matthew. About the book

A Discovery of Witches is the 2011 debut novel of historian Deborah Harkness and the first book of the All Souls Trilogy. It follows Diana Bishop, a Yale historian of science and a reluctant witch who has spent her life suppressing her inherited magic. While researching alchemy at Oxford's Bodleian Library, she calls up a long-lost, enchanted manuscript known as Ashmole 782, an act that draws the attention of witches, vampires, and daemons who have been seeking it for centuries.

Among those drawn to her is the vampire and geneticist Matthew Clairmont, and the forbidden bond that forms between them sits at the heart of a story about heritage, knowledge, and the danger of denying who you are. The novel weaves real history of science and alchemy into a contemporary supernatural romance, exploring themes of coexistence among different kinds of creatures, the burden of secrecy, and the tension between scholarship and instinct.

Released by Viking, the book became a New York Times bestseller and launched a popular trilogy, frequently compared to Twilight and Harry Potter for blending romance and fantasy with an adult, academically textured sensibility. It later spawned a Sky One television adaptation that ran for three seasons, broadening the audience for Harkness's blend of history and magic.
