Into that was mixed the cunning of a bull shark and the beauty of the moon jellyfish. He added the seahorse’s fidelity and the curiosity of a porpoise. When his creation was molded just so—two arms, two legs, a head, and a heart—Pontus breathed some of his own life into it, making the first People of the Salt. About the book

"House of Salt and Sorrows" is a gothic young-adult fantasy that reimagines the Brothers Grimm tale of the Twelve Dancing Princesses. The story follows Annaleigh Thaumas, the sixth of twelve sisters who live in the seaside manor of Highmoor in the kingdom of Arcannia. After four of the sisters die in a string of tragedies, villagers begin to whisper that the family is cursed by the gods, and Annaleigh grows convinced the deaths were no accidents. As her surviving sisters slip away each night to dance at glittering, secret balls, she races to uncover the darkness closing in on her family.

Beneath its ballgowns and shimmering slippers, the novel braids together grief, the weight of inherited curses, and the danger of seductive escape. Craig threads ghostly visions and invented sea-god mythology through a murder mystery, and the looming presence of death gives the romance and family drama a horror-tinged edge. The book sits at the intersection of fairy-tale retelling, gothic horror, and mystery.

The book was Erin A. Craig's debut and launched the Sisters of the Salt series; it became a New York Times bestseller and was nominated for the 2019 Goodreads Choice Award for Best Debut Novel. Reviewers frequently praised its atmospheric, eerie tone and its inventive expansion of the source fairy tale, and its success established Craig as a voice in dark YA fantasy.
