Quotes from the Book

Always, I think, but that feels like too much. Too big. A word I shouldn't say to the night air. Something I couldn't say without revealing every ounce of my feeling to everyone around, regardless of language. But I give him a nod, and I say it in my heart.

It’s always startling to consider that he has the skill and the strength to fend off an army, but a gentle touch has the power to hold him still.
Maybe you feel like you're accomplishing something when you make me bleed in the dirt, but you're fooling yourself. You aren't solving any problems at all." "You being powerless doesn't solve any problems at all either." "I'm not powerless," I snap. The instant I say it, sparks and stars flicker in my blood, almost taking my breath away.
My entire life has taught me that wishes are good for nothing. I couldn't wish for my mother back. I couldn't wish for my father to be a better man. I couldn't wish for coins to save the forge. Now that I'm here in Emberfall, my wishes are just as pointless. I can't wish for Tycho to return, or for the scravers to be gone, or for anything to be easier. [...] Maybe it doesn't matter that my wishes won't come true. Maybe instead of wishing, it's time to start doing.
I know your loyalty is steadfast. You've proven it countless times, and you're proving it even now. But much like my brother, I forgot that true loyalty is earned, not owed. I forgot that true friendship requires sacrifice -- from both sides.

About the book

Carving Shadows into Gold is the second book in Brigid Kemmerer's young-adult fantasy trilogy Forging Silver into Stars, a spinoff set in the same Cursebreaker world as A Curse So Dark and Lonely. The story follows the King's Courier Tycho, who has bound himself to a dangerous bargain with the magical scraver that saved King Grey's life, alongside Jax, who has left his village of Briarlock for the wider world of Emberfall, and Callyn, who unexpectedly finds herself at the Queen's side with magic at her fingertips. The three are pulled in different directions as political tensions and threats from the north escalate.

The novel centers on themes of trust, identity, and the cost of bargains made under pressure, weaving a queer romance through a story of court intrigue and rising conflict between the kingdoms of Syhl Shallow and Emberfall. Kemmerer uses the separation and reunion of her central characters to explore loyalty, found family, and the way unlikely human connection can hold against fear and prejudice toward magic.

Published by Bloomsbury in early 2025, the book continues a series that grew out of Kemmerer's bestselling Cursebreaker trilogy and returns familiar figures such as King Grey alongside new viewpoint characters. Kemmerer is a New York Times bestselling author whose books have sold over a million copies and been translated into more than twenty languages, and the Forging Silver into Stars series has been received as an emotionally driven continuation aimed at fans of romantic YA fantasy.
