“It did not do to give your heart to a man so entirely, she thought. Men did not value what they came by easily. Once you loved, you laid yourself open to pain.”
― Alison Weir, quote from The Lady Elizabeth
“She had already decided that, when she grew up, she was going to do whatever she pleased and not let anyone order her about.”
― Alison Weir, quote from The Lady Elizabeth
“I waste so much time sleeping. And time is of all losses the most irrecuperable, for it can never be redeemed.”
― Alison Weir, quote from The Lady Elizabeth
“I must bear it well as I may. As my sainted mother used to say, we never come to the kingdom of Heaven but by troubles.”
― Alison Weir, quote from The Lady Elizabeth
“But what use was the semblance of power without the substance?”
― Alison Weir, quote from The Lady Elizabeth
“Often, little brother, there is no smoke without fire.”
― Alison Weir, quote from The Lady Elizabeth
“What she loved was being admired, being wanted, being pursued—but she did not think she wanted ever to be caught.”
― Alison Weir, quote from The Lady Elizabeth
“Kat embraced her, concealing her dismay as best she could. For these few months, fraught as they were, Elizabeth had been entirely hers again.”
― Alison Weir, quote from The Lady Elizabeth
“Life was good, and already she understood that to be aware of happiness when you were actually feeling it, and not just in retrospect, was to be happy indeed.”

“He was not afraid, in fact he was content to go: So much that had been pleasurable in his life was now beyond his capacity, and that he could not bear.”

― Alison Weir, quote from The Lady Elizabeth
“I think sometimes, being silent and watching, can change a person.”
― Shannon Hale, quote from Book of a Thousand Days
“Wherever you look there’s meanness and corruption. This room, this bottle of grape wine, these fruits in the basket, are all products of profit and loss. A fellow can’t live without giving his passive acceptance to meanness. Somebody wears his tail to a frazzle for every mouthful we eat and every stitch we wear—and nobody seems to know. Everybody is blind, dumb, and blunt-headed—stupid and mean.”
― Carson McCullers, quote from The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter
“But there is another and greater distinction for which no truly natural or religious reason can be assigned, and that is the distinction of men into kings and subjects. Male and female are the distinctions of nature, good and band, the distinctions of heaven; but how a race of men came into the world so exalted above the rest, and distinguished like some new species, is worth inquiring into, and whether they are the means of happiness or of misery to mankind.”
― Thomas Paine, quote from Common Sense
“No one wants to admit we're addicted to music. That's just not possible. No one's addicted to music and television and radio. We just need more of it, more channels, a larger screen, more volume. We can't bear to be without it, but no, nobody's addicted. We could turn it off anytime we wanted. I fit a window frame into a brick wall. With a little brush, the size for fingernail polish, I glue it. The window is the size of a fingernail. The glue smells like hair spray. The smell tastes like oranges and gasoline.”
― Chuck Palahniuk, quote from Lullaby
“You do that Helen", Mallory dared. "And tell him we said to f*ck off while youre at it".”
― Chloe Neill, quote from Some Girls Bite
BookQuoters is a community of passionate readers who enjoy sharing the most meaningful, memorable and interesting quotes from great books. As the world communicates more and more via texts, memes and sound bytes, short but profound quotes from books have become more relevant and important. For some of us a quote becomes a mantra, a goal or a philosophy by which we live. For all of us, quotes are a great way to remember a book and to carry with us the author’s best ideas.
We thoughtfully gather quotes from our favorite books, both classic and current, and choose the ones that are most thought-provoking. Each quote represents a book that is interesting, well written and has potential to enhance the reader’s life. We also accept submissions from our visitors and will select the quotes we feel are most appealing to the BookQuoters community.
Founded in 2023, BookQuoters has quickly become a large and vibrant community of people who share an affinity for books. Books are seen by some as a throwback to a previous world; conversely, gleaning the main ideas of a book via a quote or a quick summary is typical of the Information Age but is a habit disdained by some diehard readers. We feel that we have the best of both worlds at BookQuoters; we read books cover-to-cover but offer you some of the highlights. We hope you’ll join us.
