“Oftentimes
when I read a book,
I want to savor
each word,
each phrase,
each page,
loving the prose
so much,
I don't want it
to end.
Other times
the story pulls me in,
and I can hardly
read fast enough,
the details flying by,
some of them lost
because all that matters
is making sure
the character
is all right
when it's over.”
― Lisa Schroeder, quote from The Day Before
“I get it. Sometimes you want to remember. And sometimes you need to forget.”
― Lisa Schroeder, quote from The Day Before
“There is something
comforting
about a lighthouse.
In the dark of the night,
hold on to the light,
and you’ll get
back home safely.
I need a personal lighthouse.”
― Lisa Schroeder, quote from The Day Before
“Some mornings,
it's hard to get
out of bed.
Sleep lures you
like a stranger
with a piece of candy.
Follow me.
It will be okay.
I promise.
You know better,
but still you follow,
because you really do
love candy.”
― Lisa Schroeder, quote from The Day Before
“People always say
chocolate makes
everything better.
I say friends make everything better.”
― Lisa Schroeder, quote from The Day Before
“One time Mom told me the people
you can be quiet with
are the ones
you are the most comfortable with.”
― Lisa Schroeder, quote from The Day Before
“I see you.
Because in you,
I see me.”
― Lisa Schroeder, quote from The Day Before
“I wish
for the breeze to
blow away
our troubles.
I wish
for the sun to
dry out
our sorrows.
I wish
for the friendship
to fill up
our hearts.”
― Lisa Schroeder, quote from The Day Before
“To plan it all would take away from the fun and the excitement of what's to come. Let the day reveal itself to me in its own time, in its own way. I am yours, Today. I am yours.”
― Lisa Schroeder, quote from The Day Before
“It's like
the silence
that follows
the beautiful song.
Or
the darkness
that follows
the glitter in the air.
He knew
what to do
to make it better.
As I walk toward
the door,
I take a deep breath.
I know
what to do
to make it better.
As he
embraced me,
I will
try to embrace
this day
that follows
the day before.”
― Lisa Schroeder, quote from The Day Before
“Life is the bad
with all the good.
The deadly sharks
with the beautiful sea stars.
The gigantic waves
with the sand castles.
The licorice
with the lemon and lime.
The loud lyrics
with the rhythm of the music.
The liver disease
with the love of a father and son.
It’s life.
Sweet, beautiful,
wind on your face,
air in your lungs,
kisses on your lips.
life.”
― Lisa Schroeder, quote from The Day Before
“We have a lot of questions, and we
want to understand.
Music helps with that .
Music helps with everything.”
― Lisa Schroeder, quote from The Day Before
“I see you.
The real you.
The you who fillips a coin,
hoping to understand
how fate works:
this choice or that choice,
ultimately leaving you
no choice at all.
The you who smiles
and tries to be happy
because that’s what
people want
you to be.”
― Lisa Schroeder, quote from The Day Before
“One picture will have to be enough.
Just like
one day
will have to be
enough.”
― Lisa Schroeder, quote from The Day Before
“sometimes, love is loud.
sometimes, love is quiet.
Always, love is my mom.”
― Lisa Schroeder, quote from The Day Before
“I want him to live,” he says.
I watch,
helpless,
as the pain slips out.
Tears fall
when he whispers,
“But damn it, I want to live, too.”
― Lisa Schroeder, quote from The Day Before
“He cups my face
with both hands
leans in,
eyes lingering a
sweet second
before his lips
are there on mine,
teasing,
playing,
tasting,
kissing.
When he pulls away,
I'm breathless.
He nuzzles my ear.
"Now that's thrilling."
You got that right.”
― Lisa Schroeder, quote from The Day Before
“He reaches over for my hand. Holds it there, on my leg. My heart skips a beat, and I gave his hand a little squeeze as I put all of my carefully selected words away.”
― Lisa Schroeder, quote from The Day Before
“I like
the memories
because they remind me
I haven't always been
this girl,
constantly
mad or scared
or confused.”
― Lisa Schroeder, quote from The Day Before
“Let the day
reveal itself to me
in its own time,
in its own way.
I am yours, Today.
I am yours”

“Sometimes you want to remember. And sometimes you need to forget.”
― Lisa Schroeder, quote from The Day Before
“One outer
paddles around
on his back,
spinning a blue ball
on his tummy.
I could watch them
for hours.
Because they get it.
They get that
life is short and
you should just
forget the crap
and have fun.”
― Lisa Schroeder, quote from The Day Before
“His warm voice
tiptoes into the
quiet room.”
― Lisa Schroeder, quote from The Day Before
“Anticipation is the best
alarm there is, and it shook
me awake before
my phone even had the chance.”
― Lisa Schroeder, quote from The Day Before
“It brings me
back to the moment,
and I want to live
the moment with everything I’ve got.”

― Jamie Ayres, quote from 18 Things
“Carmack wrote some code that duped the computer into thinking that, for example, the seventh tile from the left was in fact the first tile on the screen. This way the computer would begin drawing right where Carmack wanted it to. Instead of spitting out dozens of little blue pixels on the way over to the cloud, the computer could start with the cloud itself. To make sure the player felt the effect of smooth movement, Carmack added one other touch, instructing the computer to draw an extra strip of blue tile outside the right edge of the screen and store it in its memory for when the player moved in that direction. Because the tiles were in memory, they could be quickly thrown up on the screen without having to be redrawn. Carmack called the process “adaptive tile refresh.” In lay terms, as Tom immediately understood, this meant one thing: They could do Super Mario Brothers 3 on a PC! Nobody, no one, nowhere had made the PC do this. And now they could do it, right here, right now, take their all-time favorite video game and hack it together so it could work on the computer. It was almost a revolutionary act of subversion, he thought, especially considering Nintendo’s stronghold on its own platform. There was no way to, say, copy a Nintendo game onto a PC as one would tape an album. But now they could replicate it tile for tile, blip for blip. It was the ultimate hack. “Let’s do it!” Tom said. “Let’s make the first level of Super Mario tonight!” He”

“She knew it was weird that she'd reached out to him the way she had. But she also knew that there were a lot of people in the world who regretted never doing the things they felt were right because they were afraid of seeming strange or crazy. Lisa wouldn't settle for that sort of mediocre existence, one bound by invisible social cues. And she had a good feeling that someone like Solomon Reed would appreciate that.”

“Disappointment in others is tough. But disappointment in yourself is far worse.”
― A.R. Torre, quote from The Girl in 6E
“Five months after Zoran's disappearance, his wife gave birth to a girl. The mother was unable to nurse the child. The city was being shelled continuously. There were severe food shortages. Infants, like the infirm and the elderly, were dying in droves. The family gave the baby tea for five days, but she began to fade.
"She was dying," Rosa Sorak said. "It was breaking our hearts."
Fejzić, meanwhile, was keeping his cow in a field on the eastern edge of Goražde, milking it at night to avoid being hit by Serbian snipers.
"On the fifth day, just before dawn, we heard someone at the door," said Rosa Sorak. "It was Fadil Fejzić in his black rubber boots. He handed up half a liter of milk he came the next morning, and the morning after that, and after that. Other families on the street began to insult him. They told him to give his milk to Muslims, to let the Chetnik children die. He never said a word. He refused our money. He came 442 days, until my daughter-in-law and granddaughter left Goražde for Serbia."
The Soraks eventually left and took over a house that once belonged to a Muslim family in the Serbian-held town of Kopaci. Two miles to the east. They could no longer communicate with Fejzić.
The couple said they grieved daily for their sons. They missed their home. They said they could never forgive those who took Zoran from them. But they also said that despite their anger and loss, they could not listen to other Sebs talking about Muslims, or even recite their own sufferings, without telling of Fejzić and his cow. Here was the power of love. What this illiterate farmer did would color the life of another human being, who might never meet him, long after he was gone. In his act lay an ocean of hope.”

BookQuoters is a community of passionate readers who enjoy sharing the most meaningful, memorable and interesting quotes from great books. As the world communicates more and more via texts, memes and sound bytes, short but profound quotes from books have become more relevant and important. For some of us a quote becomes a mantra, a goal or a philosophy by which we live. For all of us, quotes are a great way to remember a book and to carry with us the author’s best ideas.
We thoughtfully gather quotes from our favorite books, both classic and current, and choose the ones that are most thought-provoking. Each quote represents a book that is interesting, well written and has potential to enhance the reader’s life. We also accept submissions from our visitors and will select the quotes we feel are most appealing to the BookQuoters community.
Founded in 2023, BookQuoters has quickly become a large and vibrant community of people who share an affinity for books. Books are seen by some as a throwback to a previous world; conversely, gleaning the main ideas of a book via a quote or a quick summary is typical of the Information Age but is a habit disdained by some diehard readers. We feel that we have the best of both worlds at BookQuoters; we read books cover-to-cover but offer you some of the highlights. We hope you’ll join us.
